Politics is inherently controversial, and teaching this subject requires extra effort to overcome the skepticism which is entirely natural for this subject matter. My approach to teaching is closely linked to my approach to political science research, which attempts to balance analytical rigor with an acceptance of the inevitable subjective element in politics. In my mind, failure to strike a balance in this regard explains why many students internalize American society's tendency to look down on politics, which creates a self-reinforcing cycle of cynicism and corruption. I have a clear opinion on many issues, but I do not preach any ideological dogma. I include a light-hearted element of humor in my lectures, partly for fun but also in hopes of getting students to see things from a different point of view. (I try to maintain balance and avoid offending people.) Above all, I aspire to instill in my students a passion for learning and a capacity for mature, discerning judgment.
