In fact, I must look back to my undergraduate years to find the first in a series of mentors, and now my dear friend, Magdalena Mora. She has made many things possible for me and I appreciate her more than I can ever tell her. Next, I would like recognize my professor and dissertation director at UNC Chapel Hill, Pablo Gil Casado, who suggested Antagonэa to me as a dissertation topic and introduced me to Luis Goytisolo in April, 1987. He recognized from an early date that Goytisolo would become one of Spain’s most respected authors, and I am indeed grateful that he made me aware of his work and that he so expertly guided my first approaches to it. His moral support and professional advice continue to be greatly appreciated. Since receiving my doctorate and beginning my career as a college professor, I have been encouraged by many colleagues. The late Michael Pincus, the department chair at my first full-time teaching position, the College of Charleston, supported my request for a grant to meet with Goytisolo in Barcelona in the summer of 1989 and to continue the work I had begun in my dissertation. Even after I left Charleston to take my current position at Sweet Briar College, we kept in touch, and he offered many words of wisdom about the workings of the academic world. We all miss you, Mike. At Sweet Briar, I have found a unique working situation in which I have close contact with students who challenge me at every turn to stay abreast of the new information in my discipline as well as the way it interrelates with others. I gratefully acknowledge the many travel grants from the Sweet Briar Faculty Grants funds that have allowed me to attend and present papers at conferences in Spain and the United States and to maintain contact with Luis Goytisolo. From recom-mending me for the Mednick Grant proffered by the Virginia Association of Independent Colleges in 1992 to the Sweet Briar Fellowship which gave me the privilege of a year’s sabbatical to finish this project, Sweet Briar has been very supportive of my efforts in every aspect of my professional career. It would be very difficult to find a better subject of study than that offered by the novels of Luis Goytisolo. Although Antagonэa has been the major focus of my study for ten years now, it still constantly surprises me with new paths to explore and from which to learn. Luis Goytisolo has been extremely patient and generous with his time. In addition to letters, interviews, and visits, we have most recently added e-mail to our forms of contact. As I have had questions about the manuscript, the spontaneity and rapidity of his replies via e-mail have amazed and often delighted me. Through the Luis Goytisolo Foun-dation and its annual symposium since 1993 on Hispanic literature in El Puerto de Santa Marэa, Spain, I have been privileged to meet and form friendships and working associations with critics and scholars who share my interest in contemporary Hispanic literature.
