Semester project 100 points Class participation 30 points 13 quizzes (lowest score dropped) 240 points Final exam 130 points Total possible 500 points Extra credit: Bulletin board participation up to 30 points A = 450 or higher B = 400-449 C = 350-399 D = 300-349 Quizzes: Most of this class format will rely on discussion. Therefore, it is imperative that students read the assignments prior to class time. To encourage this behavior, some quizzes will be given at the start of class. Some quizzes may be offered as take-home assignments, and others may be given during class time. Quizzes may be multiple choice, short answer, or some combination of these. Each quiz will be worth 10 points. There will be 13 quizzes. Your lowest quiz score will be dropped. Missed quizzes may not be made up. Total 240 points Project: Your project grade is earned as you progress through your stages of preparation as well as on the final product. Just as you will prepare reading material and outlines for your classmates, they will be providing you with material to prepare you for their presentation. To encourage you to examine material from others' projects, to listen to and participate in their discussions, a portion of your project grade will reflect your participation during the discussion period of others' projects. Total 100 points Final Exam: The final exam will be comprehensive short answer and essay. 130 points DateWomen & GenderMens LivesvideoJan 15, 17syllabus Ch 5 Biological Basis of SexThousand Acres or SirensJan 22, 24Ch 2 Images of Men & WomenPart 9 Masculinities in the Media Segment 19 Dreamworlds II or Killing Me SoftlyJan 29, 31 Topic due: Jan 31 10 ptsCh 3 Doing GenderPart 1 Perspectives on MasculinityBoxing Helena or Thelma & LouiseFeb 5,7Ch 4 Meanings of DifferencePart 7 Male SexualitiesBoys Dont Cry or OrlandoFeb 12, 14Ch 6 Becoming Gendered: ChildhoodPart 2 BoyhoodDelores Claiborne or Stand By MeFeb 19, 21 Draft due: Feb 21 Title, list resources, outline 20 ptsCh 7 Becoming a Woman: Puberty & AdolescencePart 3 Collegiate Masculinities: Privilege & PerilAmerican History X or PhiladelphiaFeb 26, 28Ch 8 Sex, love & romancePrice Above Rubies or Story of UsMar 2-10Spring BreakMar 12, 14 {13* Dr Js B-day}Ch 9 Commitments: Women & Long Term RelationshipsPart 6 Men in RelationshipA Dolls House or Not Without My DaughterMar 19, 21 Updated outlines, copies of articles Mar 21 10 pts.Ch 10 MotheringPart 8 Men in FamiliesWhere the Heart Is or Radio FlyerMar 26, 28 Readings for fellow students due:Mar 28 10 ptsCh 11 Work & AchievementPart 4 Men and WorkWorking Girl or 9 to 5Apr 2,4Ch 12 Midlife & BeyondAmerican Beauty or One True ThingApr 9,11Ch 13 Violence against women8 mm or Sleeping With the EnemyApr 16, 18Ch 14 Mental & Physical HealthPart 5 Men & Health: Body & MindSnake Pit or MarnieApr 23, 25 Outlines 10 pts Presentation (disk, cd or tape) 30 pts. Purpose: This seminar course in psychology emphasizes the skills of access, integration and interpretation of primary scientific literature on a selected topic. The purpose of this course is to study the social, cultural, and psychological aspects of gender construction that influence the traits, norms, stereotypes and roles of men and women. The approach assumes four themes: Gender means more than just sex; Language and labeling are a source of power; Women are a diverse group, men are a diverse group, and there are more differences within women and within men than there are differences between men and women, and; Psychology should be related to social change. Class format: The topics discussed in this course are often personally relevant to students lives. The discussion format is likely to encourage participants to give voice to pain and frustration, to challenge prevailing political and philosophical beliefs, and to awaken passionate responses to feminism and to feminist scholarship. We should observe these five basic rules for class discussion, adapted from Dr. Arnold Kahn of JMU. Privacy: Although sharing personal experiences is critical to this course, the student is under no pressure to share personal experiences on any particular topic. Confidentiality: Class members should not share personal experiences revealed by other members of this class to anyone outside of class. Controversy: Many of the issues and topics of discussion will be controversial and invoke strongly held personal and political philosophies. There is no reward or penalty for holding a particular set of beliefs. It is important that each student identify what they believe, and why. Whether or not a student supports a feminist perspective as a correct or valid one will not affect their grade in this class. Tolerance: Students may feel uncomfortable sometimes about what is being discussed. If this occurs, it is important for the student to express their discomfort. Just because a person feels differently than others in the class does not render that feeling or point of view incorrect. Integrity: All work should comply with the Sweet Briar College Honor System. Bulletin board: There will be more to discuss than class time will allow. Please post open and tolerant discussion topics on the Blackboard bulletin board for this class. You will receive 1 point for each quality posting on the bulletin board for up to a maximum of 2 points per week. Attendance: Active discussion is integral to the format of this class, therefore, attendance is essential. The attendance policy for this Tuesday-Thursday class is that four absences receive no notice, but every absence after four results in a letter decrease in the course grade.
