Daylilies


Although many daylilies have finished for the year, many others are still blooming. Here are soome now blooming in my garden.

This is Catherine Woodbury one of my favorites because of its muted pastel lilac color.



This is Magic Dawn


This is a new one in my garden this year - Startle. It has a yellow picotee edge.


This is Fires of Fuji - a warm double red with yellow and orange highlights.


Finally, Hyperion, an old classic yellow that I like for its color, a pure yellow with no gold or orange in it.

Early Flowers


Spring is a little late this year, but there are some early flowers out now. The earliest is the Helleborus "Royal Heritage", that bloomed for the first time this year. It is purple, with darker veins.




Also blooming are the February Gold daffodils, which have been out for two weeks.


Larger, and a about a week later isthe daffodil Sun Disc


The iris dadiae, planted in planters are just now blooming.


Colorful all winter is Nandina "Compacta", which stays small and turns a brilliant red in the fall and remains red all winter.

South East Border


The ostrich fern has emerged.



The lady fern is emerging.



Orange Dream japanese maple now at its color height.

New perennials flowering


There are several perennials flowering now including three kinds of Ajuga retans. This is the variety "Purpurea", with meduim blue flowers and bronze leaves.



This is a form with lilac flowers and bronze leaves



This one has green leaves and medium blue flowers



This is my favorite - green leaves but dark blue flowers



The bluish form of Phlox subulata, "Blue Emerald" is now open.



The pulmonaria "Viettes Deep Blue Sea" is open



And the Vinca major is blooming

New Daffodils and Violets


The late daffodils are now open including Erlicheer

And the violets are coming up in the lawn and the woods. This is the white form of Viola cucullata



This is the violet colored one



This is a wild violet in the woods and in the front lawn



This is the pansy I planted last fall - it blooms all through the winter, pausing whenever the temp is below 20 degrees.

Sat - April 10, 2004

New flowers this week


We are entering into the height of Virginia's spectacular spring show - starting with these azaleas. The Wolfpack azaleas, a single warm red, are opening



A3, the creeping azalea is also opening



A6, a more lavender red.



A14, Coral Bells, a single pink.



Christmas Cheer, a single cool red



This was just planted this year, it is a double red.



Of course, the dogwood trees are also coming out.

New flowers April 2


The later daffodils are open now, including Avalanche

Salome opened last week, but now the trumpets have changed to an apricot color

The Chinese Redbud is now open.



There are white violets (Viola cucullata) all over the lawn



The Weeping cherry is now open



The spiraea Goldflame is opening its orange leaves.

New Flowers March 28


This time of year things change very fast. Lots of things opened this week, including these daffodils:

This is Snowbird, a double white.



This is Precocious



This is Chromacolor



This is Salome. It opens with a yellow trumpet - later the trumpet changes to an apricot color.


This is Replete - a double with a salmon colored center.



This is the white with a double yellow center that opened last week. Notice how the center has now faded to a very pale yellow, almost white.



The japanese maples have just stated to open. The earliest in my garden is Acer palmatum "Orange Dream," which opens a beautiful color, orange with red edges.



My weeping cherry is just beginning to open its flowers, too.



The forsythia is out, too. I have two different varieties, this is the suspensa.



There are also a couple of new perennials out, too. The Bluets have appeared in the lawn.



The creeping phlox is in bloom, too. I have a couple of varieties. The pink one is the first out.

New Flowers March 21


Today the Fortissimo Daffodils D1 are open:



The Barrett Browning Daffodils D13 are also open:



Also D14, which is a double yellow with a white perianth:



There are two kinds of yellow trumpets - both in the daylily garden. This is D18 with a very large trumpet (it is also found in with the Heliopsis):



and this is the small yellow trumpet D25:



Also opening this week is Flyer - D19, a fully double yellow in the Main Border:



and D37, a semi-double yellow in the Blue Garden:



The PGM Rhododendron is the first rhododendron to open:

Sun - March 14, 2004

New flowers today


Spring is gradually progressing, and some new flowers are now open.
In the front yard, underneath the redbud these daffodils are now blooming.

In the front foundation border, a white dutch crocus is opening.

In the the back border, the Vinca minor is starting to open up all over the place.

In the Main border, Daffodil #16, the white with large yellow cup is opening.

Daffodils, Hellebores


Some of the first flowers of spring have come into bloom. In the front foundation, the first tiny daffodils, tete-a-tete, are out.



One of the yellow trumpets are up in the daylily border.


And another yellow trumpet is open in the main border.



The February Golds are up, also Sun Disc in the middle border, and Ice Follies in the front border.






The Lenten Rose also opened.



Two other flowers opened this week - the vinca minor and the PGM Rhodie.

Crocus and Hellebore


I did some early work in the garden today. I put top dressing on the main border, but there is lots left to do. There are only a few things blooming right now. No daffodils are blooming yet, though many are very close. There is a light puple snow crocus blooing in the main border - where the Coreopsis "Moonbeam" is planted.

There is also a Dutch crocus blooming in the front.


The only other thing in bloom is the Helleborus that has open a purple flower with green interior.

Palms


There are not a lot of different palms here on St. Georges Island, but these are some of the ones I have seen. These are Washingtonia robusta, the mexican fan palm. We used to see these everywhere in California.

Sago palms (Cycas revoluta) - not really palms at all but a cycad- are also common.

Also common among the dunes on the beach are a kind of yucca that grows a stem.

Not much is in flower at this time of year, but I did see this.


I think this is the Pindo palm, Butea capitata.
