Coolwell Cemetery Motifs

In addition to biographical data, gravestones convey ideas about
death and dying through the display of mortuary motifs.

A three-dimensional cross symbolizes Jesus' sacrifice on the cross and an association between the deceased and his/her church.
A two-dimensional version of a cross. This simplified cross design is often found on the graves of veterans.
The praying hands can be associated with those of God, the deceased, or his/her family, praying on behalf of the deceased.
This is a metal marker, provided by the funeral home. If you look closely at the motif in the center (blown up in the lower right-hand corner) you will see a laurel wreath, associated with victory and mourning.
This complicated motif involves a figure prostrate on the cross (either Jesus or a mourning woman), ornate columns on either side of the stone, floral imagery, and an inscription "Rock of Ages."
Some gravestones lack motifs of any kind, such as this locally available stone that is roughly carved into a slanted, small marker.
