CLASS QUESTIONS, PAPERS, & DEADLINES

All writing assignments should be typed, except for those completed in class.

Please do not e-mail me papers or any other assignments unless I ask you to.

Questions for Class:  Everyone is expected to submit at least one typed, substantive question on the readings for every class session, unless otherwise instructed.  We may not get to discuss all of the questions, but I will read any of them we don’t get to and will comment on them or will try to bring them up in another class.(Substantive questions open up the text in some way and generate some meaningful discussion.  Answers to them are not merely factual.)Be prepared to tell us, if asked, why this particular question occurred to you and why you think it may be of some interest to the rest of us.   If your question concerns specific lines, passages, or quotes, make sure you include the relevant page references, along with your question.  More specific, text-linked questions are more useful than vague, overly abstract or general ones.   Good questions often lead to good subjects for papers and research projects.

Deadlines:  Late work will not be accepted unless an extension has been arranged.  Normally, deadlines will be extended only in the case of a documented personal, family, or medical emergency. Questions for class discussions, in-class writing assignments, quizzes, and other activities completed in class may not be made up..

Format for Papers:  Type the title of your paper, your name, the course title, and the date on a separate cover page.  You do not need to retype any of this information on the first page of your essay.  Use 1" spacing on all sides.  Please do not double-space between lines.  Instead, set spacing at 1.5.  Fonts should be set at 12-point font.  Proofread your work carefully.  Paginate and staple your essay before submitting it. For your own protection, make back-up copies of your essays before submitting them.

ABSENCES

In keeping with official College policy, you are expected to attend all class sessions.  Since this course is essentially a workshop, it requires frequent and extensive class discussions and other collaborative efforts.  Consistent attendance and active participation are vital for your own progress in the course and for its overall effectiveness. If you know that you will have to miss class, arrange to get class notes and assignments from a classmate. Normally, absences will be excused only in the case of a verifiable personal, family, or medical emergency. Unexcused absences will lower your final grade. If you are on an athletic team and must miss a class or two because of 'away' games, please let me know as soon as you are given your game schedules.
